Behind the Scenes: How We Secured an Interview with Canadian Icon Rick Hansen
With special behind the scene photos
Most interviews we do are conducted in Studio C at Cowork Chilliwack, but the journey to interview Rick Hansen was unique.
Planning this conversation with Rick Hansen took months of preparation. From the moment we secured the interview three months prior, my team and I were determined to create a product worthy of his legacy.
On the day of the shoot, my photographer Alex Harte, his partner Danielle, videographer Matej, and Dasa joined me as we set out from Chilliwack to Burnaby. The road trip itself was filled with energy—we all understood the gravity of the day. Each of us had a role to play, from setting up lighting to testing audio, ensuring we captured Rick’s words with the quality and respect they deserved.
Walking into the Rick Hansen Foundation’s space was surreal. There was a palpable sense of history in the room. Rick greeted us warmly, immediately putting us at ease. The interview flowed naturally, thanks to Rick’s openness and the preparation we had done as a team.
My approach to the interview was intentional. I began by asking Rick about his early life and the pivotal accident that changed everything. From there, I moved into exploring how he transformed his mindset, focusing on resilience and the support that helped him reclaim his identity.
Next, we transitioned to discussing his broader vision and the decision to channel his energy into making a global impact through the Man in Motion World Tour. To conclude, I asked Rick about the idea of individual influence and whether one person can truly make a difference—a theme central to his work.
This experience was more than just another episode—it was a collaborative effort that showcased the power of storytelling. It reminded me of why I started this journey: to share impactful stories that inspire others.
My deepest gratitude goes to my team for their dedication and to Rick Hansen for his generosity in sharing his story.
