How to Honour Veterans on Remembrance Day
With Associate Professor of History Dr. Scott Sheffield
As Remembrance Day approaches, it’s a powerful time to reflect on the sacrifices of our veterans.
I spoke with Dr. Scott Sheffield, an Associate Professor of History at the University of the Fraser Valley, who shared insightful ways we can all show respect on this important day.
Dr. Sheffield, whose research focuses on Indigenous military service in Canada, discussed how Indigenous men and women have served in Canada’s military, often driven by a commitment to protect their communities and values, despite facing significant inequities upon returning home. Today, their stories are gaining recognition as we work toward a fuller understanding of our shared history and honor all veterans.
Dr. Sheffield suggested several meaningful ways to show respect and honour veterans on Remembrance Day. One simple yet powerful act is to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony, even if the weather isn’t ideal. Standing in the cold, wet weather can serve as a small reminder of the harsh conditions many soldiers endured in service.
He also noted the importance of engaging in activities that directly relate to the values veterans fought for, like exercising our right to vote. By voting, we honour the sacrifices made to protect our democratic rights, making this act a tribute to their service and dedication.
Another way to show respect is to use Remembrance Day as an opportunity to educate ourselves and others. This could mean watching a documentary on Canada’s military history, reading about Indigenous veterans, or attending community events where veterans’ stories are shared.
Dr. Sheffield highlighted how important it is to understand not just the contributions of veterans, but also the values they defended—freedom, democracy, and equality. When we engage with these stories, we connect with their legacy and the lessons we can apply to current global conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine or the situation in Gaza.
Ultimately, Remembrance Day offers each of us a chance to express our gratitude and reaffirm our commitment to the values veterans fought to protect. Whether through small acts like wearing a poppy, attending a ceremony, or casting a ballot, we honour their sacrifices by remembering what they stood for and carrying those values forward.
