For many Canadians, The Tragically Hip and Gord Downie represent more than just music—they are cultural icons. Actor Fred Ewanuick, beloved for his role in Corner Gas, had an unforgettable encounter with Downie that left an indelible mark on his life.
“I’m like five feet away from Gord Downie,” Fred recounts with a mix of awe and disbelief. Standing so close as Downie belted out lyrics was a surreal experience, one that blurred everything else around him. When the set wrapped up, fans flooded the band, eager to connect with the iconic group. Fred, overwhelmed, found himself retreating to the back of the room, feeling out of place and hesitant to approach.
As the day ended, Fred signed out of the production and noticed a van pulling out. To his surprise, it stopped, and The Tragically Hip—on their way back to the hotel—stepped out. What happened next was something Fred could have never anticipated.
“Gord opens the door and gets out,” Fred shares, his voice tinged with the emotion of the memory. Downie, noticing Fred lingering nearby, approached him and struck up a conversation. “He just talks with me like a normal person,” Fred recalls, marveling at Downie’s warmth and sincerity.
Their chat spanned a few minutes, touching on their plans—Fred mentioned a cross-country trip with his wife, and Gord reciprocated by sharing details of the band’s tour. It was casual, human, and profoundly meaningful.
For Fred, it was more than a conversation with a celebrity. It was a glimpse into Downie’s genuine nature. “I see why people might think of him as a god,” Fred muses. Gord’s humility and openness, despite his status, left Fred deeply moved. “He wasn’t Gord Downie, the big star. He was just… a person. A kind, thoughtful person.”
The encounter wasn’t long—just a few minutes—but its impact was lasting. “For whatever reason, it gets me emotional to talk about it,” Fred admits. “It’s one of those moments I think about every once in a while and just go, wow, that was one of the coolest moments of my life.”
Gord Downie’s legacy extends far beyond his music. It’s in the way he made people feel seen, valued, and connected—even if only for a brief moment. For Fred Ewanuick, that moment will always be a cherished memory, a testament to the power of authenticity and kindness.
