🎙️ Today Is the Day — Nuanced, with Aaron Pete Begins ✨
The start of a new era has begun! Learn more here.
200 episodes ago, I started a show called Bigger Than Me.
It was exactly what the name suggested — a student, curious and wide-eyed, stepping into conversations that felt bigger than he could grasp. I was in law school. I was learning about justice, identity, politics, and the systems we’re all living in — and I wanted to learn from people who had lived them, challenged them, and in some cases, been crushed by them.
I interviewed journalists, fighters, premiers, environmentalists, comedians, chiefs, and dissidents. People who made me think. People who made me uncomfortable. People who changed how I saw the world.
This show began as a way for me to listen — and now, I feel ready to speak.
Not because I have all the answers. But because after 200 conversations, I’ve learned to ask better questions. I’ve learned what kind of space I want to create.
That’s why, as of today, the podcast is officially becoming Nuanced, with Aaron Pete.
Why Nuanced?
Over the past five years, the show has evolved. What began as a platform to explore inspiring stories has grown into something deeper — a place to wrestle with uncomfortable truths, to challenge groupthink, and to hold space for multiple perspectives at once.
In a world addicted to hot takes, rage-bait, and instant outrage, I believe we need something slower. Something deeper. Something better.
Nuanced isn’t just a name. It’s a philosophy — and a promise.
A Bit About Me
I come from humble beginnings. I was raised by a single mom who worked incredibly hard to make sure I had a shot at a better life. We didn’t have a lot, but we had love, determination, and a deep belief that education and integrity could change everything.
That belief carried me through a criminology degree, into work as a Native Courtworker, and eventually to law school. Today, I serve as a Councillor for Chawathil First Nation — the community that raised me.
Along the way, I’ve been honoured to receive the King’s Coronation Medal and to be named one of UFV’s Top 50 Alumni. But none of that means as much to me as using this platform to elevate ideas and voices that often go unheard.
The Five Pillars of Nuanced
This rebrand isn’t just cosmetic — it’s a commitment to a higher standard. These are the values that will guide every conversation:
1. Maturity — No hot takes, no nonsense
We don’t do knee-jerk reactions or outrage bait. If a topic is worth discussing, it’s worth doing so with patience, care, and depth.
2. Steelmanning — The best version of every argument
We take every idea seriously — especially the ones we disagree with. Before critique comes understanding.
3. Controversy (with integrity) — We won’t flinch from the hard stuff
This show isn’t afraid to touch the third rails — but never for shock value. Controversy here is a consequence of caring deeply.
4. Openness — Every side deserves to be heard
We’re not neutral. We’re curious. And curiosity demands that we listen — especially when it’s difficult.
5. Responsibility — Conversations that serve people, not clicks
We don’t just have a platform. We have a purpose. Every episode is built to inform, challenge, and serve the audience.
The Journey Continues — Starting Tonight
Tonight, we’re celebrating all of this at the official 200th Episode Celebration and Launch of Nuanced.
If you're reading this on June 27, there's still time to join us in person.
We’ll gather for an evening of storytelling, food, and community. You’ll hear from the team who helped make this show possible — producer Tim McAlpine, COLLA Films’ Matej and Dasa, social media manager Rebekah Myrol, and photographer Alex Harte.
And we’re incredibly honoured to welcome Elder Eddie Gardner, who will offer a cultural closing through singing and drumming — grounding the event in wisdom, tradition, and gratitude.
